Schiacciata: The Sicilian Street Sandwich You Can Make at Home

:The first time I was in Sicily, I had the foodie experience of a lifetime. The second time around, it was topped even more so by enjoying more street food than family gatherings. One of my favorite street sandwiches was the Schiacciata (ski-yah-cha-ta).

These sandwiches are made differently all over Sicily, but my favorite was the kind that I’ve made here. It was made from a thin pita-type bread and moistened with olive oil mixed with herbs, then filled with meat and olives and thin slices of Parmesan.

It’s so easy to put together that it barely requires a recipe. And for moms and working people during Ramadan, this is a very easy yet healthy on-the-go recipe to make over and over again.

The star of the show really is Deli Halal meats. To these particular sandwiches, I add their Salami, Roast Beef, and Beef Pastrami, but you could use any of the meats they have. See the variety here, most of which are free of any nitrites.

That’s one of the reasons I’m so happy with their products because without the nitrites and with the exceptional taste and quality, I’m happy to agree that this is a wholesome choice for sandwiches, appetizers, kids’ lunches and more.

Here’s how to make the Schiacciata & what you’ll need:

Pita bread that can be cut and opened (found at most Middle Eastern/Mediterranean markets)

One tablespoon of olive oil mixed with 2 teaspoons dried oregano and thyme and a pinch of sea salt.

Your choice of Deli Halal meats (I like to choose a variety and then stuff at least 3-4 thinly sliced pieces into the bread)

4-5 Kalamata olives (pitted and crushed)

A few thin slices of Parmesan cheese or 2 tablespoons shredded Parmesan

Open the pita by cutting off the top about 1/4 inch. Moisten the bread with the olive oil/dried herb and sea salt mixture.

Add the meat, then the olives and cheese.

Place the sandwich on a hot grill or wrap in foil and heat in a cast iron pan for a few minutes on each side to warm.
